It's been cold, really cold, but we've been out there!
This month in East Tennessee has brought record cold temperatures, with plenty of days below freezing and even some snow on the ground. While the frigid weather has slowed outdoor activity, it’s given us the perfect opportunity to catch up on tying flies, organizing gear, and preparing for the upcoming busy season.
Despite the chill, the fishing has actually been pretty good! The occasional spurts of high water have kept the fish happy as the region begins to thaw from the cold snap. On low-water days, the colder water temperatures have made the fish a bit lethargic, but targeting higher flows or staying close to the dam has provided some productive fishing opportunities.
If you plan to fish in these cold conditions, staying warm is key. We recommend layering with thermals underneath your clothing and using insulated bibs or waders to keep the chill out. Proper preparation and the right gear can make for a comfortable and successful day on the river, even in January.

Check Out This Big Brown!
This gorgeous brown trout was caught while streamer fishing on the Watauga River. With water temperatures hovering near freezing, the conditions were tough, but we made the most of a great opportunity and capitalized!
Nymphing has been especially strong during high water, with small BWO nymphs producing excellent results. Additionally, there are still a few fish showing interest in egg patterns.
The cold temperatures have been the only real complaint, but bundling up and staying prepared for winter weather has made it all worthwhile. The fishing remains productive for those willing to brave the chill!
