South Holston River Trout Fishing in March

This week, the South Holston River experienced consistently low flows throughout the day, creating ideal conditions for wade fishing and exceptional sight casting opportunities for wild brown trout. With warmer temperatures signaling the arrival of spring, the fish were notably active. In the mornings, we observed trout cruising the river's edges, actively foraging for aquatic nymphs.

Dry-Dropper's are Deadly on Low-Water this time of Year.

Midge hatches are in full swing! This week, our guides observed significant early morning midge activity on both the South Holston and Watauga Rivers. Remember to look up occasionally—you might spot clouds of midge adults. While the rising trout along the bank edges were sporadic, they were definitely targeting these tiny insects. Midge dry flies, due to their diminutive size and the unpredictable nature of the rises, can be challenging to fish. However, a larger dry fly, such as a #14 Comparadun or Elk Hair Caddis, paired with a Zebra Midge dropper, can be highly effective in triggering strikes

What Can We Expect to See going into the Last Week in March.

South Holston's low flows continue, offering excellent wade fishing opportunities. While a light rain is anticipated, it's not expected to significantly impact river levels. As we approach the latter part of the week, East Tennessee will experience temperatures in the 70s, likely triggering increased Sulfur and Caddis activity. This promises a fantastic week of fishing!

On the Watauga, Wilbur Dam will release water sporadically during mornings and evenings. Utilize our 'Fly Fish The Watauga Page' to plan your wade fishing around these generation periods.
